Blog Post Week 5

1. This week in lab, we started class by checking the status of our fast plants and butterflies. I was surprised to see how much are fast plant had grown since last week. We now have one butterfly as well. I was introduced to the topic of Ecology, I believe I have learned this before but it was a good refresher. I learned that Ecology is the study of the relationship between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment. I was also able to learn what biomes, ecosystems, and habitats are and the difference among the three. I was also able to revisit the topic of food chains and webs and learn how these revolve around the flow of energy and matter.

4. I can apply what I have learned to my future teaching when teaching students about Ecology and food chains and webs. I would like to use our third activity in my future teaching. This is where we were assigned an ecosystem and had the task of creating a food chain for it with 8-10 relevant animals and plants. I thought this was a fun, interactive way to learn more about ecosystems and food chains and would benefit students. It allows them to have the freedom to choose what ecosystem interested them while still learning about our overall concept.

5. New or remaining questions:

How are our fast plants growing without water?

What will we do with our butterflies now?

What will happen when we continue with activity 3 and disaster strikes our ecosystem?

  1. Hi Abby! I was also surprised to see how fast our fast plants grew as well! When I think of plant growth, I don't usually think of plants being able to grow as quickly as these do. I agree that lab provided a good refresher about ecology. I have not taken a science class in a long time, so I am glad to build upon my current knowledge this semester. I think your last question is really interesting as well. I am looking forward to exploring this in lab!
