Blog Post Week 12

 







1. This week in lab, we learned more about what matter is and the different properties that matter can have. We touched on how properties change when objects are broken into pieces through our experiments. In lab, we experimented with density, volume, mass, conducting electricity, and attraction to a magnet. I learned that if you change the appearance of something, you are not changing the properties. This is why when we did each experiment with a whole object and the object broken up in pieces, that results were the same. I also learned that the reason to why something sinks or floats is due to density. If the density of something is less than water, it floats. If the density of something is more than water, it will sink. 

4. I can apply what I have learned in lab to my teaching in the future. I would like to use the first activity we did in lab in the future. This was the 3-2-1 activity where we wrote three things we learned, two things we found interesting, and one question. I thought this was a good way to reflect on our reading for the week and what we would like to explore more. I also liked in lab that we were not given the answer to what matter is or the properties that matter has or how size affects this. I would like to use this same strategies with students where they are given an idea and they are able to explore this on their own and come up with their own predictions. I would also use all of the lab activities that we did in class.

What makes magnets attracted to some objects but not others?

  1. The question that we investigated in this lab was, "What would you like your future classroom to look like?" While designing our classrooms some other questions we thought about were the resources that we wanted to provide students, what we valued as a future educator, and something that makes it unique to us such as a favorite color.  2. Week 12

  What did you do in lab today? This week in lab, we looked at weather and climate. I was able to learn the difference between these. Climate is a 30 year average of weather, while weather is the daily stuff we see. We found that climate change is happening and 99.99% of scientists agree that this is human caused. We looked at how climate change is happening by looking at NASA images of change. Following this, each group chose a different section of Iowa and picked three cities to gather data for. We looked at how heavy rainfall has changed over time. Our group did the region that was labeled Iowa State University. We found that there was an increase in heavy rainfall in each of these regions. This is directly caused by climate change. As temperature increases, humidity increases (water in the air), as humidity increases, precipitation increases.   What did you do in lab today? In lab, we first looked at what a rock is and found that a rock is any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like matter that occurs naturally as part of our planet.  These will not be human-made materials.  We then explored rock cycles through an activity with Starbursts. We created two different sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks, and metamorphic rocks. We learned that a sedimentary rock is one that is cemented and compacted together, an igneous rock is melted and then cooled, and a metamorphic rock is heat (not enough to melt) and pressure. The top two rocks represent igneous rocks, the middle two represent metamorphic rocks, and the bottom two represent sedimentary rocks.
